As we all know Bayern Munich did the sextuple in the 2020-2021 season, which means they won the 6 major trophies that were available to win. These included: Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB-Pokal, DFL Supercup, UEFA Super cup and FIFA Club World Cup. This phenomenon has only ever happened once before and that was in 2009 when FC Barcelona managed to achieve this cataclysmic achievement. It is one thing doing it once but is it possible for Bayern Munich to do it again?
In short, it is possible. They are already looking very strong in both the German Bundesliga and the Champions League. Although they won it previously with Hansi Flick, who is now the German National team head coach, their new manager is young and hungry to win. Julian Nagelsmann is one of the hottest properties in management currently. His first club was Hoffenheim.
When he first took management at Hoffenheim he became the youngest manager in Bundesliga history at the age of 28 and he managed to help them to safety and avoid relegation. The following season he took them to 4th, meaning that they qualified for the Champions League, the first time in their history. He then went on to manage RB Leipzig, taking them to the Champions League Semi-final and also coming 2nd in the Bundesliga. Now we can see why Bayern Munich snatched him up so quickly. He is known for his attacking football, which suits Bayern Munich perfectly.
So far in this 2021-2022 season in the Bundesliga they have already recorded 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, putting them at the top of the table. To highlight the attacking style of play they have already scored 33 goals in these 9 games and they only conceded 8 goals.
Likewise in the Champions League they have 9 points out of an available 9, already beating Barcelona, Benfica and Dynamo Kiev, without conceding a single goal. These statistics are quite sublime, with only one loss in all of their games this season across 3 different competitions. They have such a high chance of winning at least 2 or 3 trophies this season but I believe they can go further and win more, and potentially match the record 6 once again.
In terms of players, they have one of the best goalkeepers in the world and in the history of football, Manuel Neuer, who continues to show why he is so highly rated. He consistently makes outrageous saves which sometimes spares the blushes of his defence. They have a young and fast defence this season, after letting David Alaba and Jerome Boateng leave in the summer.
They have replaced them with one of the most exciting young defenders in world football with Dayot Upamacano. This new defence has a lot less experience than before but more importantly has a lot more pace and agility. I strongly believe Bayern Munich has the best midfield in the world. Joshua Kimmich has been on top of his game for a few years already and continues to show attributes going forward and defensively, making him one of the best midfielders in the game.
Alongside him is his German teammates Thomas Muller and Leon Goretzka, who have formed an extraordinary trio in their midfield. All 3 of them producing goals and assists on a weekly basis shows their importance to the team. Going forward they have a deadly attack with one of the best strikers to ever play football leading the line.
Robert Lewandowski is by far the most in-form striker in the past few seasons, consistently scoring goals at an alarming rate. Last season he beat the late Gerd Muller’s goalscoring record in the Bundesliga, scoring 41 goals in only 29 games! However, he could not do this alone. On the wings they have Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané and Kinglsey Coman, who are all rapid and great with the ball. Between these front 4, they provide the majority of the goals and assists for Bayern Munich consistently.
Having been a big fan of the Bundesliga in the past 3 or 4 seasons, I have watched many matches of Bayern Munich and when they are on song, they are unplayable. It is a joy to watch and I cannot remember a team that were so attacking and that can create as many chances as they do.
With all of these aspects, such as a young and exciting manager and a team that has a good balance of experience and youth, I strongly believe that this Bayern Munich team has a chance at winning all 6 trophies again this season. For sure they will win multiple times, but if they can keep their players fit and healthy, then I do not see why not they can achieve the sextuple once again.
